BUDDY ART PILOT PROJECT ~ APRIL 5, 2008

Welcome to Buddy Art!

This Century Art Gallery, in cooperation with the Sharpe Community Scholars Program at the College of William & Mary and James City County Parks & Recreation, presented Buddy Art, a pilot project designed to provide art activities for children with special needs and/or physical disabilities. The Buddy Art event was held on Saturday, April 5th from 2:30-4:00 p.m. in William & Mary’s Blow Memorial Hall.

The activities were chosen based on the ages, ability levels, and interests of the participating children. Each child was assigned a volunteer "Buddy" to work with them one-on-one, helping them to explore the materials, and replenishing their supplies as needed. Each station had a volunteer Activity Supervisor who was responsible for setting up and overseeing the activity, explaining to participants what the materials were and how to use them. Participants could stay in one area or explore multiple activities during the duration of the class period.

The art activities provided for the pilot event were Finger-painting, Clay (air-drying clay), Collage (cutting or tearing & pasting colored/textured papers and other objects), Drawing (crayons; markers; pastels; colored pencils; drawing pencils), and Painting (tempera).

Parents were invited to participate with their child or to simply observe, but at least one parent/guardian was asked to stay during the pilot class so that we could get their feedback. Buddies were assigned to each child regardless of the parent’s participation so that the parent could share the activity without having to be responsible for managing the materials and set-up.

Our goal is to continue Buddy Art in the fall, offering bi-weekly classes over 10 weeks during William & Mary’s fall term and again during the spring term with students from the Wm & Mary Sharpe Program continuing to serve as "Buddies".

The overwhelming response to the pilot class was positive – The kids had a great time – Parents asked that we continue the program in the Fall, and the Buddies asked if they could volunteer next year, even if they were no longer in the Wm & Mary Sharpe Community Scholars Program.
