Karen Schwartz - Purple Mountain Majesties

About the Art:
Landscapes are among my favorite painting subjects and this is a composition I've done several times in collage using hand-painted, textured papers. When I learned about the painted violins project, I thought it would be fun to apply this technique and design format to a violin's rectangular shape, and to emphasize the musical theme, I looked for a song with mountain theme to use in its title. When I thought of "spacious skies", "amber waves of grain" and "purple mountain majesties", I knew I had my song!

The winning raffle ticket for this violin was drawn on
November 10, 2004.

About the Artist:
Karen earned her B.A. in Fine Arts from San Diego State University with a concentration in painting and printmaking. Watermedia painting has been the focus of her work for the last several years. She began studying watercolors with Jan Ledbetter in 1997, and has since studied with some of country's leading watercolorists and collage painters.

Her work has been exhibited in shows at the Poquoson Public Library; This Century Art Gallery, Williamsburg; the Williamsburg Public Library; Cristallo Art Studio, Williamsburg; and at the Reves Center for International Studies at the College of William & Mary, as well as the Virginia Watercolor Society's Annual Exhibitions, of which she is a signature member; "Art on the Square" and at "An Occasion for the Arts" in Williamsburg. She also has work on display at Blue Skies Gallery in Hampton, and exhibits regularly in the Upstairs Members Gallery at This Century Art Gallery.
