Polly Nunn - Calla Lilies

About the Art:
White calla lilies growing in lyrical design: I attempt to magnify reality in my paintings and lead the viewer into a different perspective, revealing the flower's serenity and grandeur in an undiscovered dimension.

The winning raffle ticket for this violin was drawn on
November 10, 2004.

About the Artist:
Polly Holden Nunn received a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from James Madison University in 1980. After graduation, Polly worked as a graphic artist for ad agencies, newspapers, and an outdoor advertising company. Creating billboards involved seeing her original design enlarged from twelve inches to forty-eight feet.

The scale and boldness of outdoor design influenced the acrylic paintings that she was constantly working on at home. Polly enlarged her flowers as much as fifteen times their original size and created an illusion of great space and depth. The bold, brilliant colors on large canvases lead the viewer into Nunn's flowers to explore the intricate detail of the petals and shadows. She occasionally uses an airbrush to add a flesh-like softness to the petals, giving them a sensuous quality.

Polly Nunn moved to Williamsburg with her family in 1986. She is a member and a frequent exhibitor of This Century Art Gallery, Ganache Hill Gallery, Charles H. Taylor Art Center (Hampton) and a member of the Muscarelle Museum (Williamsburg). Five of her paintings were purchased and are displayed in the Williamsburg Hospital's art collection.

Polly received first place in the painting category in On the Hill's "Best of the Best" Show with her painting Irises in April 1996. Irises also won Juror's Award at the Twentieth Century Gallery Members' Show in June '95. The Williamsburg Regional Arts Center Gallery displayed eighteen of her paintings in a one-woman show in 1994. In May 2001and April 1994 she was the featured artist at Blue Skies Gallery in Hampton. In 2003 Polly displayed her paintings, sculpture and photography in a three women show at This Century Art Gallery. Polly has received recognition in The Occasion for the Arts as well as Virginia Beach Boardwalk Art Shows. Most recently, her painting Orchids won the Award of Distinction at the 2004 Bay Days Annual Juried Exhibition at the Charles Taylor Gallery.

In addition to painting flowers, Polly paints murals in private homes and businesses. Her subjects have included marsh scenes, European hillsides, and rock and roll musicians. In 2002 she was commission to paint a life size dogwood tree filled with dozens of birds at a Lynchburg restaurant. She painting four murals and displayed other artwork in the 2003 Parade of Homes. Polly has also been working three dimensionally in clay and copper. Polly serves on the board of This Century Art Gallery working on promotions and teaches classes there and for Williamsburg/James City County Parks and Recreation. You can email her at pahnart@cox.net.
