Mission Statement

Purpose:
The Art of Music is a collaborative effort undertaken by two important non-profit arts organizations in Williamsburg - The Williamsburg Symphonia League and This Century Art Gallery. Expenses and profits will be split 50:50, and the funds raised will be used by the organizations to support their artistic programs. A colorful brochure describing the project and showing pictures of the violins will be mailed to patrons of the arts later this summer; information and updates will be linked from the organizations' respective Web sites: williamsburgsymphonia.org and thiscenturyartgallery.org.

Description:
Violins (inexpensive, "student" quality and purchased by the committee) were given to 14 artists to decorate; the artists were given free rein to decide how they wanted to express themselves, and a fifteenth artist has fashioned a violin made of glass. After a reception ("Overture") on September 10 at Gallery on Merchant's Square, the decorated violins will be displayed in as many venues as possible to give wide exposure to the public (Events and Exhibitions for the Violins on Tour - the "Intermezzo"). Included in this tour are scheduled appearances at schools and museums for the purpose of introducing young children to the arts and demonstrating the interconnections between the arts and emphasizing their importance in a civilized society.

The funds will be raised through the sale of raffle tickets for eight of these works of art; the remaining seven violins will be auctioned at a gala event, the "Finale", on November 10. Both receptions are open to the public (invitations and advertisements will promote these events), but an admission fee will be charged to cover the cost of food, drink, venue, music, etc. This type of project has been done in other areas of Virginia and the U.S. Examples of the painted violins from other benefits have been displayed on the Web sites of various musical organizations, and they are handsome decorative pieces indeed. Profits vary from project to project; underwriting and business support will be pursued to ensure the best possible results in Williamsburg.

Community Assistance:
As is the case with all non-profit organizations, volunteers and public-spirited businesses are essential elements in a successful fund-raising project. We appreciate the support of everyone involved in this exciting event that promises music for the eyes in a new form of the "Bows Arts."
